Port Alberni Offers Unique Bowls Experience This August

Port Alberni is running a very special experience for lawn bowlers August 17th and they’d like you to be a part of the action.  This is a one day tournament in a Bowls 3Five format.  It will be mixed triples using two bowls each.  There will be four 10 end games, with the games consisting  of two 5-end sets.   Each game should take about one hour to play.  If you want to try a different type of tournament, this just might be for you.    If interested, please contact derekjburke@gmailcom.  Start time is planned for 9 A.M., just in case it’s hot.

Grounds

Grounds

Hi All,

We are a volunteer organization and many people commit a significant
amount of time so that all members can enjoy the game and clubhouse
gardens and facilities.

Some of our new members have signed up as volunteers and I thank you.

We typically reserve Monday mornings (~7.30 start) for greens
maintenance, mow and maintain the grass surrounds and perform routine
pruning of the flower beds and bushes. Just show up and someone will
direct you. We also offer free coffee and treats to the volunteers.

I thought I’d share what we did today and some projects that need
additional help.

Monday morning crew: greens were mowed and rolled this morning. Rose and
clubhouse garden pruned and trimmed. Green surround and guest area grass
cut and edged.

Key Project to be done:

Garden/Rockery areas surrounding the green need weeding and plants and
bushes pruned.

Trees and bushes along Stanford Avenue need cutting back.
Car Park garden needs bushes pruned. (Ask Sandi or Lynne for details)
Mesh Fence needs painting green.
Virginia creeper needs to be cut back.
Cement plant pots in “Rock Garden” need painting and some new life.

Let me know by email if you have a burning desire to take on one of
these projects. I’ll review replies and allocate teams.

Thanks for your attention.

President’s Message

President’s Message

We have had a very successful, busy bowling season so far. The many volunteers have been working very hard to make our club look fantastic and one of the best on the island.

Kudos to our coaches and volunteers who have hosted grade 10 & 11 students, spent a morning coaching Fortis team as a pay back for their work on the club benches and have spent many hours coaching our novices and anyone who is in need of help on the green. Tournaments held at our club so far this year have been very successful, thanks once again to the many volunteers who work hard to make this happen!

Your board members have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make everything run smoothly for your enjoyment. You may not see them but believe me they are there and dedicated to making the club one of the best!

Coaching

COACHING

The last scheduled coaching day on the calendar is July 26. This does not mean that we are abandoning you to your own devices. Coaching for anyone is always available. You can contact the coaches through the website under player development. If you want help from a specific coach, note that in your request. It is not an inconvenience. We enjoy coaching and helping whenever and wherever we can. Novices can also contact their mentor. Failing all the above, my phone number and email is in the Member Directory. Didn’t get a directory? We’ll fix that, too.

At some point, everyone struggles with something, especially as our bodies stop doing what they have always done before and it gets frustrating. Coaching can help find solutions to these issues.

URGENT: Club email issues!

As many of you know we are continuing to have issues with members not receiving email sent from the club. This was the major reason why we upgraded our web site, and it has continued to get worse, and is likely to continue degrading in the future thanks, mainly, to the prevalence of spammers. While we would STRONGLY encourage all members to use the web site as their source of club information there are times when we would like to reach out via email.

You can help!

We want ALL MEMBERS to do the following:

  1. Make sure we have your correct email address.
  2. Check your spam folder for club messages and, if found, mark them as NOT SPAM.
  3. Add any parksvillelawnbowlingclub.com email address you want to receive message from to your email address book, such as mmm@parksvillelawnbowlingclub.com
  4. Whitelist @parksvillelawnbowlingclub.com. Whitelisting is a process of saying “I WANT to receive mail from these people”. Follow the instructions on the web site help page which can be accessed here: Site Help

None of these steps are going to guarantee delivery; email has always been unreliable and it’s just getting worse.

If you know of someone who is NOT getting emails, be sure you tell them about this post.

If you have questions or need help, contact the web team.

Baking – Upcoming Tournaments

Baking Needed

Members, we have a number of tournaments coming up at our Club in the next month. We would like to be able to offer participants come baked goods when they attend. If you are able to provide cookies, squares, cakes, etc. we would welcome them. Please remember to put your name on the containers and place your items in the freezer at the Club.

There are a number of empty containers ready for members to pick up as well. Please check the cart near the kitchen to see if any are yours.

Thank you.
