REMINDER – Beachfest Sandcastle Competition

Volunteers are needed to man the entrance at the annual Sandcastle Competition and our Club has been fortunate enough to be awarded five shifts. This is one of the Club’s most lucrative fundraising events, and the monies derived from our participation goes a long way toward the maintenance of the Club. So, if you are looking for a way to help your Club and you want to have a lot of fun in the mix, please volunteer.

A sign-up sheet has been posted on the Club bulletin board…we need 4 volunteers per shift.

The dates are:  July 17, 2023 – 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm

                              July 25, 2023 – 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm

                             August 3, 2023 – 9:15 am to 1:15 pm

                             August 9, 2023 – 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm

                             August 19, 2023 – 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm

If the date you want to volunteer is full, please add your name to the “spares” list at the bottom of the sign-up sheet.

Sheila and I will be attending all shifts, so we look forward to working with you on this fun endeavor.

Thank you to those who have already signed up.

Baked Goods

I would like to thank all those that have come forward and provided baked goods to start of this season. This has been extremely useful in providing goodies for after the Tuesday and Sunday draws as well as other events. However, stocks are getting low so fresh supplies are needed. If you can, please help, and please remember to put your name on any containers.

Fun Days Help Needed

There are 4 Fun Days each year in connection with Holiday weekend celebrations. These are very popular events and usually we have a full complement of participants. At present, I am a committee of one and I am looking for a couple of volunteers to help.  If you are looking for a way to help out in the club, this committee does not take up a great deal of time but is very worthwhile and satisfying in its acceptance by the club.

If you would be interested in helping, please contact me.

Revisions to the latest Laws of the Sport

World Bowls has recently rescinded two of the new laws that had come into effect in Canada just this spring. They are Laws 37.1.3 and 37.1.5.3.

The laws were introduced to combat cheating. If a player either stopped one of their own bowls or lifted another bowl to clear its path, that team would immediately forfeit the game. The circumstances might be stopping your team’s last bowl that was likely to disturb the head and take away shots you were holding, or to lift another bowl to clear a route to the head where you could improve your team’s situation in the head. Believe it or not, it seems these things happened somewhere.

Somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere, where the new laws came in last fall, the new laws have been applied to punish those that innocently stop one of their team’s bowls heading directly to the ditch, with a forfeit of the game. (Who hasn’t intercepted a bowl before it hits the ditch?). The laws were not created for this situation, but are loose enough to be interpreted that way.

So when you get your new Laws book, strike out Laws 37.1.3 and 37.1.5.3.

Here is a link to the article on the World Bowls site that explains the situation in more detail. https://www.worldbowls.com/laws-umpiring/wb-law-decisions-2-2/#May%202023

Week of May 22 to May 28

Waldo Chuckles

Waldo Chuckles    has gone missing & we need your help to find him! He has also developed a (??more??) split personality that means he thinks there are 3 of him! (This post & the trophy picture DO NOT count!!)

Your job is to find him and tell us where he is. All entrants with correct answers will be entered into a draw for a valuable (& tasty) prize. Find 1 Chuckles you get 1 entry, find 2 and you get 3! Find all 3 and you get 6 entries. Please be specific on your answers; minimum what page he is on and where he is on that page.

Entries are to be done using the Contact form which can be found on the Contact page and will be accepted until Thur. June 1st with the draw on Friday after the draw.

Club Fundraiser – Thrifty Smile Cards

Welcome all to a new season. This fundraiser is offered by the Club several times a year.  You have the opportunity to purchase Smile Cards from Thrifty’s Store in denominations of $50, $100, $200 or an amount of your choosing.  These cards can be used in any Thrifty’s store to make purchases and do not have an expiry.  The club earns a percentage of sales, for instance, if we buy $4,000 in cards, we will get 6% back.  We all have to buy groceries, so why not support the club at the same time.  If you would like to order some, please email me at smilecard@parksvillelawnbowlingclub.com and tell me how many and what denominations you would like.  I will take orders until Thursday June 1st, for distribution the following days. Payments may be made by e-transfer, cheque or cash. Thanks for your support. If you have any questions, please contact Chris Fereday.

Jack and Jill Tournament

Just a reminder that the Jack and Jill tournament is being held on the 19th and 20th of July. For this tournament Jill (the lady) invites Jack (a man) to be her partner. Please only one designated skip per team and not the same partner as last year. So Jills, get out there and invite your Jack before they are all taken. For more information Kathleen Motley, Games Director.

Measuring Clinic – May 26, 2023 @ 9:30

Martin Fereday, our head umpire, will be holding a measuring clinic for this year’s novices. All novices from this year and any from last year who did not participate in a measuring clinic are encouraged to attend. Knowing how and what to measure is an important part of the game. The duty does fall to thirds but every now and again you may be playing in a position that requires you to know how. It is also one of the skills you must know before moving up to the next position. See you Friday. Some coaching for those who need help with line, weight and delivery will also be available.

AED (Automated External Defibrillator) Demonstration – June 27, 2023

An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) demonstration will be offered at the PLBC clubhouse (non certified) at no cost. The demonstration will take place on Tuesday June 27th at 1:30 pm.  (There is a limit of approximately 10 people). If you are interested, please contact Trevor Motley.

Inter-Club Event at Qualicum Lawn Bowling Club – May 29, 2023

Just a reminder that the Inter-Club Event at the Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club is on Monday May 29th at 6:30 pm with 2 men and 2 ladies triples teams. The cost is $2.00 per person or $6.00 per team. This is a friendly competition to nurture the bowling community. The small cost will be split with prize money and 50% split between the clubs for expenses.

Members Area

Just a reminder  that the Members Area page is not yet activated. Once it is completed, we will notify you and provide you with a password so you can access it.

Member Directory

A new Member Directory is in the process of being prepared. There is a printed list on the table in the draw room, titled FULL MEMBERS 2023. The social members are listed separately on the last page. Please take a minute to check that your contact information is correct. The final version of the Member Directory is only produced once a year and we would like to ensure all information is accurate and up to date. If there are any errors or revisions, please Kathleen Arthone ASAP.

Updated Prices for Beverages (Pop)

In line with the latest rise in Bar prices, the only change for drinks from the fridge and freezer, as from last week is cans of Ginger Ale, etc.  are now $2.00 each. The other items such as water, Drumsticks and assorted chips remain the same.

Hot Dog Time – June 9, 2023

After the $1.00 draw on Friday, June 9th, Hot Dogs will be on sale for $5.00 (same price as a beer!!). This is the first time we are trying this out and will view the popularity with a chance of a re – run every second week. There will be a sign up sheet on the social notice board. Please sign up so that we can estimate what will be needed.

Fun and Food Night – June 15, 2023 @ 5:00 pm

The first Fun & Food night will be held on Thursday, June 15th @ 5:00 pm. The meal will be a selection of pizzas with dessert, tea and coffee being served after a 10-end  game of Score 10, as 10 points will be awarded in each end and both teams can score. The sign-up sheet will be posted in the sun room early this Tuesday and last day to sign up will be Monday, June 12th. The cost will be $9.00 per person, paid when you arrive . It is the policy that if you sign up and fail to appear, you are expected to pay for your order, IF 24 hours prior notice of cancelling is not received by me. There is a place on the sheet for members who wish to eat but not play to sign up as well as a place for members who wish to play but not join in on the meal. Hope to see you there!

Competition Updates

If you are playing in a District (Open) Tournament, we encourage you to share your results so that they can be posted on the Competition Updates page on our Website. Photographs are welcome. Contact Carol Bucyk.

Ubie Launcher Workshop – June 2 @ 9:30 am

When you bowl, does your back ache, do your knees or hips cause you a lot of discomfort? Do you find it increasingly harder to get down to deliver that bowl smoothly on the grass without dropping it and risking the displeasure of the green keeper? Many, many curlers have extended their “curling life” by using the stick to deliver the rock with greater ease and comfort.
Now the stick (a.k.a. Ubi Launcher) has arrived in lawn bowling. If you are struggling with some of the issues mentioned above or if you want to be able to extend your “bowling life” you might want to attend this clinic just to experiment with and try out the launcher even if just for interest sake. All welcome.
